Fly Fishing and Writing

There has been more written about fly fishing than about all other types of fishing, and indeed all other sports of any kind, combined.  Nearly everyone who picks up a fly rod feels the desire, sooner or later, to commit their experiences to paper.  Martin-Donovan Writing Workshops, created by fly fishing writer and casting instructor Jody Martin and retreat leader, poet, and creative writing instructor Alexandra Donovan, was formed to inspire and teach creative writing to fly fishing men and women.

Our first fly fishing and writing retreat, held in October 2023 at the North Fork Ranch in Shawnee, Colorado, was a tremendous success.  The retreat and workshop featured professional creative writing instructors and fly fishing editors working alongside the participants, some of whom were beginners and some of whom were seasoned writers, to help them hone their craft.  Responses to the initial advertisement were so numerous and so rapid that we capped the number of participants at 10, and we ended with a waiting list of 28 people.

Currently we are looking to recreate the experience, possibly at a different venue, in the fall of 2025.

See below for details about the first fly fishing and writing retreat and workshop in 2023.
